Panelists shared some of the key lessons that have surfaced from successes and doing it “the hard way.” Participants had the opportunity to participate in exercises to examine current fundraising and how to fundraise better.

Craigslist Foundation’s take on American Idol! helps develop your fundraising skills and learn how to craft a winning proposal. Nonprofit Boot Camp registrants were invited to apply for a “Reality Grantmaking” mini-grant. Applicants were screened by the session moderators to ensure diversity of causes and proposal styles, then eight finalists were selected. In this session, their proposals were reviewed and scored by an expert panel of real-world funders. The top three finishers will be awarded cash prizes ($1000, $500, $250).
Workshop III: Introduction to Fundraising Planning (SF07)

This workshop showed how to analyze your organization’s situation and develop a fundraising plan that will include a variety of revenue sources. This session provided an overview of the strategic process and components of a fundraising plan. Participants learned how to: conduct an assets inventory, develop a case statement, identify fundraising partners, and prepare a fundraising plan and calendar.

Boards That Love Fundraising (SF05)

It is the rare nonprofit Board of Directors that is doing enough when it comes to fundraising. The fault lies not with the Board Members but with organizational cultures that do not alert board members to their fundraising responsibilities or train them to be effective solicitors. In this workshop, Bob Zimmerman alerts participants to the four fundraising responsibilities of Board Members. He also demonstrates how to move Board Members past their fears of fundraising and how to equip them with the information that they will need to raise money happily and successfully.

Applicants were screened by the session moderators to ensure diversity of causes and proposal styles, after which eight finalists were selected.
