Craigslist Foundation is Winding Down Operations

Dear Colleagues and Friends of Craigslist Foundation,

After a decade of innovation in support of stronger nonprofits and communities in the Bay Area and nationwide, Craigslist Foundation will wind down operations, celebrate its successes, and transition its programs to new homes. This decision was made by our board and staff, in consultation with craigslist, Inc, whose philanthropy is now focused on supporting numerous worthy charities via its Charitable Fund. We owe a special thanks to craigslist for ten years of generous financial support and partnership, and for lending its name to our efforts.

In the coming weeks, our staff will work diligently to distill the lessons learned over ten years, and to find appropriate homes for our three key programs: Nonprofit Boot Camp (ready for its 9th Annual event), LikeMinded (ready for its next iteration after 9 months of user experience), and Alliance Building (building a network of community builders).

Thank you for your engagement with us over the years as we strived to augment the effectiveness of emerging nonprofits and strengthen the fabric of local communities and neighborhoods. The entire Craigslist Foundation team looks forward to making continued progress in other ways and at other organizations as we all move forward.

Playborhood’s Huntopoly game is a smart way to bring neighbors together!

We recently heard of Mike Lanza and Playborhood’s Huntopoly game, an ingenious way to encourage kids and adults to play in their neighborhoods and meet their neighbors. It is such a good idea that we decided to give it it’s own blog post!

Top Ten Fundraising Tips, led by Darian Rodriguez Heyman and Nicci Noble, was one of the most popular sessions at Boot Camp (and the slides are already a hit at slideshare.net!) We have video, podcast and slides of the full session available.

Someone’s Done That Already: The Best Practices of Sharing Best Practices, was presented by our own Arthur Coddington, WiserEarth’s Peggy Duvette and Leo Romero of OurBlocks.

Mining ideas for change in Charlotte, NC

I was recently fortunate enough to visit Charlotte, North Carolina to catch up with some of the great work being done by organizations and individuals on a local level in the  Queen City.

Charlotte is visibly ascendent and diverse, and has long been supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as aresident city. Susan Paterson, Program Director of the Knight community in Charlotte, was gracious enough to introduce me to a number of visionary people and projects in the area, and so I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to shed some light on their work and express my appreciation for their hospitality!
